M1911 semiautomatic

A .45 automatic.

The .45 automatic or Colt M1911 was a type of 20th century hand-held projectile weapon, a semiautomatic pistol used on the planet Earth.

History[]

In the 20th century, reporter Calvin Sutherland owned a Colt M1911 semiautomatic pistol. He used it at firing ranges several times a year and kept it in working order. He was able to break down and reassemble the weapon while blindfolded. After an altercation, he started keeping it in the upper right drawer of his desk.

Sergeant Allison Marshall also carried a .45. She kept it in her lap during a mind meld with Mestral in 1958. (TOS novel: From History's Shadow)

In 2375, when Julian Bashir, Miles O'Brien and others were thinking of ways to remove Frank Chalmers from the Vic Fontaine holosuite program, O'Brien realized that if they chose to shoot Chalmers, they would have to do so by using a period-specific weapon like a .45 pistol. (DS9 episode: "Badda-Bing, Badda-Bang")

In fiction[]

In the Dixon Hill novels, Dix's primary weapon was a Colt M1911, which he kept in his holster. (TNG - Strange New Worlds V short story: "The Monkey Puzzle Box")

In the Dixon Hill holonovel The Rich and the Dead, Dix carried a .45 revolver instead of an automatic. (TNG comic: "The Rich and the Dead!")
