Atlantis begins STS-44, a United States Defense Department mission. Personnel included Commander Fred Gregory, pilot Tom Hendrix, payload specialist Tom Hennen, and mission specialists Mario Runco, Story Musgrave and Jim Voss.[4]
1 December
Atlantis complets the STS-44 mission.[4]
26 December
The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics dissolves into a number of independent republics and federations. With this, the KGB ceases to exist.[5]
