- The USS Pioneer under the command of Captain Malcolm Reed, is almost destroyed after becoming trapped in a decaying orbit of a super-jovian planet but manages to communicate and ask for help from the "Cloud Whales" who inhabited the planet's atmosphere.[4]
- Reynaldo Sangupta and a group of engineers under Tobin Dax are able to reconcile Human warp drive technology with Andorian deflector shield technology while working aboard the USS Pioneer.[4]
