• The USS Farragut returns from her fourth five-year mission.
• The starships Farragut, Exeter and Enterprise participate in wargames.
• Lieutenant Carolyn Palamas dies of celebium poisoning.
• Pavel Chekov develops an interest in security and begins training aboard the USS Enterprise. He is temporarily reassigned, but returns a few months later, to be made temporary chief of security.

Promotions and transfers

• Looking for a new challenge, Hikaru Sulu looks into the possibility of transferring off the Enterprise. Captain James Kirk responds by promoting him to Lieutenant Commander.
• Captain Phillips assumes command of the USS Farragut and takes her out on her fifth five-year mission.
