56 Arietis (or SX Arietis) was a star located somewhere in the space of the galaxy's Alpha or Beta Quadrants.
Details[]
This was a variable star, visible from Earth in the Sol system in the constellation of Aries, some 500 light-years distant. 56 Arietis was within boundaries of territory claimed by the United Federation of Planets, near the border of the Romulan Star Empire.
In the 2270s decade, when Captain James T. Kirk was defining a patrol area for a small fleet of Starfleet starships under his command, he used 56 Arietis as a landmark defining the edge of the patrol area on the galactic east-west plane, opposite Iota Andromedae. (TOS - Rihannsu novel: My Enemy, My Ally)
- Since 56 Arietis is a "real" star system, modern scientists know a few things about its distance and makeup that were not in Star Trek.
