83 Leonis B V (also known as Cheron) was the fifth planet orbiting 83 Leonis B in the 83 Leonis system. It supported a flourishing civilization around 48,000 BC. (TNG novel: The Buried Age)
The culture was a race of humanoid natives who had curious skin coloring, divided perfectly along the middle: some were black on the left side and white on the right, others were white on the left side and black on the right. Two sides were deeply divided, with those black on the right side oppressing those white on the right side. Several millennia ago, both sides completely wiped each other out in a series of wars based on mutual racial hatred. There were only two known survivors, one of each side: of the black-right, Bele, Chief Officer of the Commission on Political Traitors; and of the white-right, Lokai, a revolutionary. Bele pursued Lokai across the galaxy for millennia to come. (TOS episode: "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield")
Cheron was also located in a strategic position relative to the planet Vulcan. Some time before the 22nd century, the Romulan government occupied the planet and began to use it to spy on their ancient cousins. (ENT novel: Kobayashi Maru)
In 2157, Trip Tucker orbited Cheron aboard the Kilhra'en and observed the ruins of an ancient civilization as well as a Romulan military outpost. While in orbit, Tucker was captured by Terix.
In 2160, Admiral Valdore massed his forces at Cheron in preparation for an all-out attack on Earth. Tucker was able to inform T'Pol of this build-up via their shared mind link and T'Pol informed Captain Archer. Archer then convinced the Earth Starfleet to mobilize forces to Cheron. These forces then engaged Valdore's in the decisive battle of the war. (ENT - The Romulan War novel: To Brave the Storm) The battle was a humiliating defeat for the Romulan government. (TNG episode: "The Defector")
After the war was ended, the entire 83 Leonis system was placed on the Coalition (later Federation) side of the neutral zone. (ENT - The Romulan War novel: To Brave the Storm)
In 2268, after fifty millennia of pursuit, Bele and Lokai came aboard the USS Enterprise and finally return to their homeworld of Cheron only to discover the planet's entire population decimated. Both unwilling to end their hatred, Bele and Lokai transport to the planet's surface, continuing their mad hunt against one another forever. (TOS episode: "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield")
When the Enterprise returned to the planet later, they learned that Bele and Lokai had set up bases on opposite sides of the planet, continuing their pointless hatred even with only each other for company. (TOS novel: No Time Like the Past)
At some unspecified point, Bele relocated to the planet Faltos, where he was encountered in 2364 by the crew of the USS Enterprise-D. Mysteriously, his skin color was now reversed, and he seemed to have forgotten his prior life before coming to Faltos, though the name of Captain Picard's ship seemed familiar to him. Reconciled to never being able to leave the planet, where many life forms had become trapped and learned to live in peace, Bele had become a member of its ruling tribunal. (TNG comic: "Here Today")
