"A Dry Day on Ferenginar" is the first of four short stories from the water portion of the New Worlds, New Civilizations anthology released by Pocket Books in November 1999. It was written by Michael Jan Friedman and illustrated by Kent Williams, with a map by Alan Kobayashi.
Description[]
- There are no sunshine patriots, no fair weather friends; there is profit and the winds of change.
Summary[]
Investigating a potential conspiracy on Ferenginar, reporter Sam Gooding meets Quark, who is griping about successive government-sponsored social reforms such as retirement benefits, universal health care, and wage subsidies for the poor. They take a hovercar taxi from the Sacred Marketplace to Chek's mansion residence, where a banquet meeting takes place with 12 other participants. They state that the changes threaten their society, causing currency devaluation and inflation. Dorl says they'll have to defy Grand Nagus Rom, and Quark agrees, explaining by way of the sixth Rule of Acquisition: "Never allow family to stand in the way of opportunity".
