Aarak III was a glaciated class P planet, the third planet of the Aarak system, located in or near Federation space in the galaxy's Alpha or Beta Quadrant. It was the homeworld of the advancing Aarakian civilization.
History and specifics[edit | edit source]
Aarak III was notable for being one of the largest dilithium sources in the galaxy. It had a harsh, frozen, snowy climate, described as an icy wasteland, and appeared white from orbit. It had a light-blue colored sky with a surface dominated by glaciers and mountains. The world's key dilithium mine was located near a palatial oasis surrounded by green grass and trees.
In the 23rd century, the Federation signed a dilithium mining agreement with Aarak III, providing the Aarakian government with geological technology that could warm the planet's ecology. A faction of Traditionalists sought to end the agreement and leave the planet untouched.
In 2269, after an encounter with an ion storm, the starship USS Enterprise diverted to Aarak III to replace cracked dilithium crystals. An attempt on Captain James T. Kirk's life sealed the world's primary mine, temporarily ceasing trade. (TOS - Year Four comic: "Issue 2")
