The Abode of Life in the Universe was a Mercan term which describes that their planet, Mercan, was the only place where life exists in the universe. This belief was changed in 2269, when the USS Enterprise arrived in orbit of Mercan after being flung hundreds of light-years from Federation space. (TOS novel: The Abode of Life).
