The Academy Marathon was an annual Starfleet Academy event held on Danula II. This tradition was started in 2293 by Commandant Sharifi. (New Worlds, New Civilizations short story: "The Footfalls of Tradition")

In 2255 in the Kelvin timeline, Cadet Pavel Chekov was training for the Academy Marathon by running barefoot through the Starfleet Academy campus and Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, hoping to become the youngest-ever winner of the event. (TOS - Starfleet Academy novel: The Gemini Agent)

As a freshman, Jean-Luc Picard passed four upperclassmen on the last hill of the marathon. J.P. Hanson watched this and, during the first Borg incursion, recalled that it was "the damnedest thing I ever saw"; he used it as an example of his belief in Picard's willpower. As of early 2367, Picard's record as the only freshman to win the marathon still stood. (TNG episode: "The Best of Both Worlds")

Captain Nikolas Kyprios was fond of recreating the Academy Marathon he participated in on Danula II as a holodeck program. (DS9 novel: Saratoga)

An alien artifact, the Ko N'ya, attempted to convince Picard that it had influenced his win. The location was referred to as "Delula II" in the book. (TNG novel: The Devil's Heart)
