The acting communications chief was a title and associated position bestowed to an officer in an acting capacity.

In the year 3188, Commander Michael Burnham granted Federation liaison Aditya Sahil of the unnamed Federation relay station a commission as Starfleet officer. His duty as acting communications chief was to keep searching for her ship, the USS Discovery. Sahil accepted the offer and affirmed it with a handshake. (DSC episode: "That Hope Is You, Part 1")

In his role, Sahil advised Commander Burnham on what was known about the Burn, the cataclysmic event that crippled the Federation in the 31st century. Without her ship, Burnham operated as courier and communicated with Terralysium, whose inhabitants did not know about her mother Gabrielle Burnham. (DSC episode: "People of Earth")

A year later, in 3189, Burnham found the Discovery when it broadcasted from the Colony. (DSC episode: "Far From Home")
