Advanced research vessel was a category of science vessel in starship classification in use by Starfleet by the 2400s decade. It denoted dedicated science vessels equipped for fleet operations in deep space. This classification was based on the 24th century Nebula-class science vessels, which participated in major fleet engagements from the 2360s onward. The Sutherland-class science ship was an evolution of the venerable Nebula class. As part of the Khitomer Alliance's sharing of technology, the Klingon Empire and Romulan Republic launched their own versions. The IKS Naj'sov was the prototype for the Naj'sov-class research vessel launched by the Klingon Defense Force.
