The Aenar compound was a settlement, an Aenar city located underground beneath the Northern Wastes of the ice moon Andoria. It was the main settlement of the reclusive, non-violent Aenar, a subspecies of the Andorians. (ENT episode: "The Aenar")
History and specifics[]
Andorian cities were built underground to take advantage of their world's geothermal energy. This included the Aenar compound.
Around the year 2104, the Andorian Empire discovered the Aenar.
In 2154, the Romulans had the Aenar Gareb abducted outside the Aenar compound. They told him that he was the last Aenar and that his people had been wiped out by Andorians and aliens. He was used by the Romulan Star Navy to operate drone ships via telepresence.
Captain Jonathan Archer and Commander Thy'lek Shran ventured to the Northern Wastes to find the Aenar and investigate their involvement in the Romulan plot to sow conflict between various governments in their stellar region. After Shran was injured, the Aenar revealed themselves to the landing party and brought them to their compound for treatment and discussions. Against the will of the Aenar Speaker, Jhamel decided to support the aliens. Jhamel led Shran and Archer out of the compound but the speaker used telepathy to keep them from finding a way to the surface. Jhamel convinced the speaker to led them go, and the party returned to Enterprise in orbit. (ENT episode: "The Aenar")
Shran and Jhamel formed a shelthreth (marriage bond) and had a daughter, Talla. In 2155, the Aenar compound was raided by Orion mercenaries on behalf of the Romulan Star Empire, to abduct more Aenar. (ENT novel: The Good That Men Do)
In 2278, the Naazh sacked the Aenar compound in an attempt to eradicate its Aenar inhabitants and their dormant Medusan mind-partners. Federation Starfleet evacuated the 70 surviving Aenar. The event was called the Aenar massacre by Starfleet Command. (TOS novel: The Higher Frontier)
