The Agni were a cephalopodic species with which the Federation made first contact in May of 2262.

They were native to a Class N environment and had a sulfuric acid-based biology. They were described as rigid, having hinged hemispherical shells with thick tentacles used for movement and manipulation of environment, and a horn-like structure projecting forward from the hinged part of the shells. The Agni had long range sensor technology that was superior to the Federation's. (TOS novel: The Captain's Oath)

History[]

After the Agni homeworld suffered an environmental change, the Agni were forced to abandon it and look for other planets to colonize. In 2262, they invaded the Adelphous, Bardeezi and Regulus systems in order to colonize the Class N planets in those systems. Since the Agni have no concept of territory, they did not understand why the "cold beings", as they refer to humanoids, attempted to repel their invasions. Believing that cold beings were irrational and could not be reasoned with, the Agni stopped trying to communicate and responded with counter-attacks. After negotiations were established, the Agni asked the Regulan colonists to leave the floating cities on Regulus I since they were afraid they could be attacked by cold beings at any time. Despite RDF Colonel Yelena Orloff's attempts to sabotage negotiations by altering the translation matrix, the talks succeeded and the Agni agreed to share Regulus I with the Regulans. (TOS novel: The Captain's Oath)
