Aleriad was a non-aligned planet prior to its destruction in 2270. It had been the fourth planet in orbit of the star NGC 994, and was the homeworld of the developing Alerians. It had been protected by the Prime Directive, though located in a region with limited Federation political influence and frequented by Orion privateers.
History and specifics[]
Prior to its destruction, Aleriad had a variable axial tilt, producing orbital anomalies and erratic periods of climate change. From orbit, dark green oceans, brown mountain ranges, and orange-white clouds could be seen. Its equatorial region featured mountain-covered continents, with oceans at the poles. It had a thin atmosphere higher in trioxides and carbon dioxide, significantly lower in nitrogen. The surface was notable for having plentiful, valuable mineral deposits.
In the 23rd century, an Orion pirate fleet placed a surgically-altered Orion deep-cover agent on Aleriad to facilitate smuggling operations, and in 2260 he initiated secret trade with the non-spacefaring world, wary of notice by monitoring starships of the Federation Commerce Control.
In the mid 2260s, on stardate 4740, the first orbital survey of Aleriad was made by the USS Drake.
On stardate 6812, Ershan Costello visited the Baikanaad Isthmus and the independent city of Baikanaad while scouting for the Federation.
In 2270, Aleriad passed through several million tons of asteroidal debris. These were the remains of Azheril, a world pulverized by gravity when it passed too close to sixth planet Eruna. Shock waves from the impact blasted 85% of Aleriad's crust into space and rendered the world incapable of supporting life. Assisting in an emergency planetary evacuation was the USS Enterprise, under the authority of Ambassador Robert Fox. (FASA RPG module: Denial of Destiny)
Politics[]
The United Federation of Planets was asked to help evacuate the planet's population in 2270, on reference stardate 2/1203. Although the evacuation was ultimately successful, Alerian religious beliefs and Orion interference made the process increasingly difficult. (FASA RPG module: Star Trek IV Sourcebook Update)
