Lieutenant Commander Alexei Chernin was a Starfleet officer who was killed on a covert mission at some point immediately prior to 2311. Despite the actual circumstances of his death, Chernin was officially recorded as having died with the explosion of the USS Universe, as the chief engineer of that ship.
