Development
Like the first series of Alien Spotlights, Volume II featured significant changes in both the creative teams and subject alien species as it progressed from first announcements to final publications. The first details of series were announced in issue 138 of the Star Trek Magazine which revealed four species; Klingons, Tholians, Ferengi and Betazoids. The article also revealed writers for the series would include Keith R.A. DeCandido, Scott and David Tipton, Mike W. Barr, James Patrick and Andrew Steven Harris.
Later internet forum posts by some of the writers revealed DeCandido would be writing the Klingon issue, with art by J.K. Woodward and that Andrew Steven Harris would be writing the Ferengi issue. Additionally the omnibus book of the first Alien Spotlight included an advert which indicated a further species in the series, the Q.
Finally in July 2008 the series was announced to be starting early in 2009, as opposed to the originally planned autumn 2008. An article on TrekMovie.com suggested at that time only two of the issues had been confirmed, DeCandido's Klingon issue and the Q issue to be written by the Tiptons. Solicitations later revealed the series would be of five issues with the final three races being Tribbles, Romulans and Cardassians.
