The Alita class was a 25th century Federation starship type, a tier 6-rated heavy escort carrier class in Starfleet and Khitomer Alliance service in the 2410s decade. (STO website: The Iconian War: Heavy Escort Carriers)

Ships of the class were operated by Starfleet as early as the 2400s. (PIC episode: "Võx")

From the year 2410 onwards, the ship type was classified as heavy strike wing escort. (STO website: Rise of Discovery: Putting the "Temporal" in "Temporal Starships")

History and specifications[]

Alita class hull material variants.

The Alita class was a stylistic evolution of the 24th century Akira-class heavy escort, which itself was inspired by the 23rd century Matsumoto-class escort carrier. Like them, the Alita consisted of a large saucer section with an underslung, integrated engineering hull and forward-facing deflector dish. A catamaran-like split secondary hull extended from the dorsal saucer, flanking the bridge module and holding the pair of warp nacelles on short nacelle pylons. (STO website: Legacy: Legendary Temporal Operative Escort)

On Frontier Day in April 2401, 14 ships of this class were part of the fleed formation mode demonstration by Starfleet. The Borg Collective assimilated the fleet and their crews, including the Alitas. The Borg fleet began attacking Sol Station and threatened Earth. (PIC episode: "Võx")

Efforts by the USS Enterprise-D and USS Titan-A crews ended the Borg Invasion of 2401 and liberated the ships involved in the Battle of Frontier Day. (PIC episode: "The Last Generation")

The tier 6-rated heavy escort carrier Alita-class ships were operated in the year 2410. These heavy escort/escort carrier hybrids were based upon the highly successful Armitage-class heavy escort carrier. In 2410, the Alita class have been built from the ground up to more efficiently combat the Iconian threat. (STO website: The Iconian War: Heavy Escort Bundle Stats)

At that time in 2410, the Khitomer Alliance powers became embroiled in the Iconian War, a devastating conflict with the Iconian Empire and their Herald servitor race. (STO - Iconian War mission: "Blood of Ancients")

Standard ship equipment was rated mark X and included a shield array, deflector array, impulse engines and matter anti-matter warp core. The impulse engines, warp core and quantum slipstream drive enabled ships of the class to reach impulse, warp, transwarp and quantum slipstream velocities. Cloaking was not an innate ability but various mechanisms could be installed to serve as a cloaking device. Typically for Starfleet starships of its time period, an Alita-class vessel was equipped with phaser beam arrays and photon torpedo launchers. Specifically, a ship of the class included four forward weapon mounts and three aft, plus an experimental weapon. Fore weapons included a phaser beam array, photon torpedo launcher and two phaser dual cannons. Aft weapons consisted of a phaser beam array and two photon torpedo launchers. The experimental weapon was an experimental hyperexcited ion stream projector. The hull was modular and could be modified at shipyards operated by New Romulus Shipyards, Klingon Defense Force Order of Builders and Starfleet Shipyards Operations at Alliance facilities across the Milky Way Galaxy. (STO - The Iconian War missions: "Explore the Flotilla", "First City", "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")

Bridge officer stations beyond the commanding officer allowed for one tactical commander, a lieutenant commander doubling as engineer and pilot, a tactical lieutenant, a science officer holding the rank of lieutenant and another lieutenant of any department. As an Alliance escort carrier, a battle-hardened ship benefitted from precise weapon systems, tactical maneuvers, quick deployment, devastating weaponry and, initially unique to the Alita class, the coordinated assault starship trait. The ship's single hangar bay housed a wing of Peregrine-class attack fighters. The carrier could issue carrier commands to the fighters. The USS Alita was the first Starfleet ship equipped with the destabilized tachyon emitters. The Alita had this technology in common with the IKS Qa'Tel of the Klingon Defense Force and the IRW Jhu'ael of the Romulan Republic Navy. (STO website: The Iconian War: Heavy Escort Bundle Stats)

Akira class variants 2411

Starfleet's multi-mission command cruisers in 2411.

The Qa'Tel-class flight deck raptor of the Klingon Empire and the Jhu'ael-class tactical carrier warbird of the Romulan Republic were the counterparts to Starfleet's Alita class. All three classes served the Khitomer Alliance to counter the Iconians. (STO website: The Iconian War: Heavy Escort Carriers)

In 2411, the then current lead ships of the Akira-class lineage received a refit to legendary starship standards. The USS Alita, alongside the Akira-class USS Thunderchild, Oslo-class USS Oslo, Zephyr-class USS Zephyr, Thunderchild-class USS Thunderchild-B and the Armitage-class USS Armitage were upgraded to match the Matsumoto-class multi-mission command cruiser USS Matsumoto. (STO website: Refractions: The Legendary Akira Multi-Mission Command Cruiser)
