Void anomaly area 2379

Location of the Void.

The Alliance, also known as Janeway's coalition, was an international pact between several starships stranded in the Void anomaly in the galaxy's Delta Quadrant in the year 2377.

History and specifications[]

In the 24th century, the Void was a featureless anomaly that sucked up nearby starships through funnels with a strong gravitational pull. Ships were unable to exit the anomaly. The space inside the Void was approximately 9 lightyears wide and offered no resources besides its captive ships.

The stranded crews resorted to piracy to survive. General Valen of the Annari Empire had kept his crew alive for five years from 2372.

In 2377, the Federation starship USS Voyager fell victim to a funnel. General Valen brought Captain Kathryn Janeway up to speed on the nature of the anomaly. Janeway's ship had been stranded in the Delta Quadrant for some time and she was unwilling to forego Starfleet protocol. While her senior officers counselled that Starfleet regulations allowed for extreme actions under the circumstances, Janeway re-read the Articles of the Federation to find a solution for their situation.

Janeway opted to form an alliance and share resources in order to find a way to escape their predicament. Their first visitors were Garon and his officers. The Nygean starship rendezvoused with Voyager. The Nygeans were intrigued but not convinced by Janeway's proposal. Neelixs, Janeway's morale officer, was not a member of Starfleet. To convince Garon, he explained that he considered himself the first member of the captain's coalition. His ship, the Baxial, was stored aboard Voyager. The Nygeans departed but received supplies from Voyager free of charge.

Voyager then defended a Hierarchy Assault-class ship from Valen and other pirates when it arrived in the anomaly. Lorquar, commanding officer of the Hierarchy survey vessel, told Janeway his ship was not equipped for combat.

Garon's ship arrived and aided both Voyager and the Overlookers against the other pirates. Garon had agreed to join the alliance. The Nygeans and the Overlookers became charter members of Janeway's coalition.

A trade soon resolved the food shortage, allowing Voyager to feed its crew and the rest of the Alliance, as well as prospective members. They welcomed Commander Bosaal, who was happy to offload his ship's population of Fantome's species, which Voyager was welcome to house. With Bosaal's admission, the captain's coalition counted seven members.

Following a lethal raid on a Kinjal frigate by Bosaal, Janeway expelled the commander from the Alliance. Bosaal and two other vessels of the captain's coalition formed a counter-pact with Valen.

A battle ensued between the two groups. The remaining four ships of Janeway's Alliance cooperated and managed to escape the Void. Back in normal space, the Allies bade farewell and went their separate ways. (VOY episode: "The Void")
