When Malcolm Reed was an Earth Starfleet cadet, he participated in a tour of cadets to visit the Cochrane Research Facility. When the facility's reactor exploded, twenty Humans died slowly from radiation poisoning, including Cadet John Mayhill. (ENT novel: What Price Honor?)
