Alpha Centauri III (also known as Kolmyri) was a planet, the third planet in orbit of the star Alpha Centauri A, located in the Alpha Centauri system, in the space of the galaxy's Beta Quadrant. It became Earth's second extrasolar colony and capital planet of the Alpha Centauri Concordium.

History[]

Alpha Centauri III was the first on the UESPA's colonization list, however it was deemed too inhospitable, its environment still suffering from a centuries-old asteroid impact, and the risk of future asteroid bombardment, instead they choose Terra Nova. However, after Terra Nova colony had gone dark, a group of colonists, whose leaders had included the famous Zefram Cochrane, defied the United Earth government and founded an independent colony on the planet in 2115.

In the following decades, the colonists began taming the harsh world, but not without many casualties. They constructed several large cities, including its capital New Samarkand, had an active terraforming industry, and established outposts on the other borderline-habitable worlds around all three of Alpha Centauri's component stars, and enough of a space infrastructure to deflect any future asteroids. (ENT - Rise of the Federation novel: A Choice of Futures)

The planet also gave home to the famed Cochrane Institute, which began working with the United Earth Starfleet not long before the start of the Earth-Romulan War.

In 2155, following the increasing Romulan threat and the fall of Deneva, many people decided to temporarily relocate to Earth; still a narrow majority stayed behind to defend their homes. Gannet Brooks visited the planet during her reporting tour. (ENT - The Romulan War novel: Beneath the Raptor's Wing)
