Amerind (also known as FGC-351772 III and Miramanee's World) was a planet of some distance from Earth and yet had a population of what appeared to be Native Americans residing upon it.
Specifics[]
It was located not far from an asteroid belt known to have pulverized multiple worlds in the system. (TOS - Star Trek 7 novelization: The Paradise Syndrome)
In the 2260s, Amerind was the planet's name according to Federation planetary databases. In the 2370s and 2380s, however, its official name was tagged as pending, officially listed as FGC-351772 III, the third planet of the system, sometimes called Miramanee’s World. (SKR novel: Point of Divergence, SCE eBook: Small World, TTN novel: Orion's Hounds)
- Last Unicorn RPG module: Star Trek: The Original Series Core Game Book listed it as the third planet as well. FASA RPG module: The Federation indexed it as the second planet, whereas ST reference: Star Trek Maps noted it as the fourth planet. It was possible that the planet's orbital eccentricity was such that it could at times be considered the second, third, or fourth planets. Another possibility was that the nearby asteroid field had destroyed two of the inner planets, complicating planetary indices.
Its composition, age and relative size were different from those of Earth. It had a warm, temperate climate with a technological/sociopolitical index of 343342-43. (TOS episode: "The Paradise Syndrome", FASA RPG module: The Federation)
History[]
In 1750, the Preservers relocated groups of Native Americans to the planet. (Last Unicorn RPG module: All Our Yesterdays: The Time Travel Sourcebook)
When visited by the USS Enterprise in 2268, Spock speculated that the inhabitants of Amerind were a mixture of Navajo, Mohican, and Delaware Indians. It was later learned that the ancestors of these tribes had been transplanted from Earth by the Wise Ones. What's more, the Wise Ones had left behind a large obelisk whose purpose was to divert any asteroid which threatened the planet and its inhabitants.
The crew of the Enterprise was eventually able to find a way into the obelisk and repair it. The obelisk subsequently diverted an asteroid the size of Earth's moon, Luna, away from hitting the planet. (TOS episode: "The Paradise Syndrome")
In 2369, Data said the planet was called Miramanee. (TNG novel: Here There Be Dragons)
In 2380, Oderi called the planet Miramanee’s World. (TTN novel: Orion's Hounds)
Mirror universe[]
In the mirror universe, a possible counterpart to Amerind may have existed. In 2371, Jean-Luc Picard, an archaeologist-for-hire, asked his patron, Gul Madred, for funding in which to investigate rumors of a planet inhabited by what appeared to be Mohicans from Earth. Gul Madred refused to support the venture, stating that little could be learned from studying past Terran civilizations. (ST novel: The Worst of Both Worlds)
