Ammonite refers to a group of shelled mollusk animal lifeforms of the class Cephalopoda. The term also refers to a particular extinct sapient alien species.

Specifics[]

Ammonite animals evolved on Earth and flourished during the Cretaceous Era. They became extinct 65 millions of years ago, the same time as the dinosaurs. The chambered nautilus cephalopod resembled an ammonite. (TOS novel: First Frontier)

A specific extinct culture of intelligent mollusk-like prehistoric aliens is generally known as Ammonites, and fossil remnants of their race are kept by individuals interested in exobiology and archaeology, such as Captain Jean-Luc Picard, who displayed one in the ready room of the USS Enterprise-E. (TNG movie: Star Trek: First Contact)

Legacy[]

In 2268, Spock discovered ammonite animals living on Earth, conclusive proof that the USS Enterprise was in an alternate timeline. (TOS novel: First Frontier)

In 2286, Captain Galina Mironova of the science vessel USS Chaffee thought that some Deemanot structures on Deema III resembled the cross-sections of giant ammonites, while others looked like spider webs and M.C. Escher stairways. (TOS novel: Unspoken Truth)

In 2371, Ishka owned an ammonite fossil. (DS9 episode: "Family Business")

In 2374, Picard and Worf traveled aboard the Daring, described as an aged Ammonite starship owned and updated by Red Abby. (TNG - The Captain's Table novel: Dujonian's Hoard)
