Amnesia is a medical condition in which some of a person's memories are inaccessible.

History and specifics[]

A concussion could erase one's memory of the injury which caused it, as well as cause further loss of memories. (TOS novel: Pawns and Symbols)

23rd century[]

In 2268, Doctor Leonard McCoy endured a severe head injury after a gravity adjustment on the Federation starship USS Enterprise caused him to fall and hit his head on a bulkhead. McCoy suffered severe amnesia for a period of about two weeks. During this time he had lost all memory of the past 25 years, including his prior service on the Enterprise and his relationships with colleagues such as Captain James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock. After Spock was seriously injured and required surgery, the impact of watching Spock dying on an operating table was enough to bring McCoy out of his amnesiac state. (TOS novel: Dreams of the Raven)

In that year, while investigating a Preserver obelisk on Amerind, Kirk inadvertently got amnesia. For the next several months, he lived on the planet with the inhabitants, aware he could not recollect important aspects of his life. Spock later restored his memories with a mind meld. (TOS episode & Star Trek 7 novelization: The Paradise Syndrome)

Also that year, McCoy diagnosed the surviving children on Triacus as having lacunar amnesia. (TOS episode & Star Trek 12 novelization: And the Children Shall Lead)

In 2273, Weyland transported Montgomery Scott to Scotland in 1746, Hikaru Sulu to Japan in 1600, and Pavel Chekov to Russia in 1942, and gave them amnesia to properly inhabit those time periods. (TOS novel: Home Is the Hunter)

In 2274, an injured Doctor Christine Chapel was brought to a hospital on Sarsithia after being infected with a local plague. General Onoth asked that Chapel remain incapacitated, and when Dr. McCoy treated her with a potential antidote, Dr. Tath secretly administered a mild tranquilizer to delay recovery. Unfortunately, the sedative reacted with the antidote. Chapel awoke in an agitated delirium with amnesia, fled from the hospital, and stole a transport. Eventually she was recovered by the Enterprise and treated in sickbay. (TOS comic: "Quarantine")

Spock[]

In 2267, while investigating a Klingon vessel, Spock was captured. He escaped to 1867 in the United States of America, Earth with amnesia. Three months later, his memories returned just prior to being rescued by the Enterprise crew. (TOS novel: Ishmael)

In 2269, the Enterprise was ordered to Aritani to investigate pirate attacks on the native population. While investigating, Spock evaded three Romulan fighters by jumping off a precipice, causing severe physical damage and amnesia. Spock recuperated on Vulcan. (TOS novel: Mindshadow)

In 2279, Spock suffered amnesia after his shuttle crashed on a planet in the Fortenue system. His memories revived after recognizing the rank stripes on Kirk's epaulets. (TOS comic: "Goodbye to Spock")

Kelvin timeline[]

In 2167, the USS Archon was sent to Beta III to set up a Federation colony. Cornelius Landru, head of Starfleet's Advanced Research Division, invented a new AI for population control. When his plot was discovered, the Archon was destroyed. The amnesiac survivors invented a religion based on Landru and the Archon. (TOS - The Return of the Archons comic: "Part 2")

Admiral Alexander Marcus manipulated Khan Noonien Singh as "John Harrison" through surgical alteration and brainwashing. Marcus at first had Khan believe that he was suffering from amnesia after a mission to Qo'noS. (TOS - Khan comics: "Issue 4", "Issue 5")

(TNG episode: "Conundrum", TNG - Strange New Worlds V short story: "Kristin's Conundrum")

In 2370, a race of Descendants claimed to have amnesia when they emerged from the Bajoran wormhole. Bajorans aboard Deep Space 9 presumed that they were descendants of powerful deities. (DS9 comic: "Descendants")

Not long afterward, Constable Odo began suffering from amnesia and extreme paranoia as a strain of virulent Bajoran flu broke out, leading to a station-wide hunt for the Changeling. Odo thought he was immune because he lacked a respiratory system. (DS9 comic: "Lapse")

In 2373, the Doctor aboard USS Voyager reached his memory storage capacity limits due to all the modifications he had been making to his program. He began experiencing amnesia, and during a medical procedure on Tom Paris, he forgot all of his medical skills. To survive, the Doctor's program was overlaid with his diagnostic program, returning the Doctor to a state similar to that when he was first activated.
