Lieutenant Andrew Stiles (also known as John Stiles) was a human Starfleet officer, and one in a line of many Starfleet officers who served from the Earth-Romulan Wars to the Dominion War. He was assigned to the USS Enterprise in the 2260s decade as a weapons officer.
Biography[]
By late 2265, Stiles was promoted out of the weapons room and assigned to bridge duty as one of the ship's navigators. (TOS episode: "Balance of Terror"; TOS - My Brother's Keeper novel: Constitution)
In that year, Stiles attended Lieutenant Lee Kelso's memorial service in the ship's chapel. Sitting on the front row alongside security officers Mathews and Rayburn and Captain James T. Kirk. Shortly after, he was the navigator on duty when the Enterprise departed from Starbase 33 and headed to Earth. (TOS - My Brother's Keeper novel: Constitution)
In late 2266, the Enterprise responded to a Romulan attack on several Federation outposts along the Neutral Zone. During this mission, the Romulans were revealed to be Vulcanoid and Stiles began to suspect that Commander Spock was a Romulan collaborator. When Spock saved Stiles's life, his views changed somewhat. (TOS episode: "Balance of Terror")
- The novelization of this episode by James Blish states that Stiles served as second officer, and was later killed during the battle with the Romulans.
Stiles left the Enterprise some weeks later on stardate 1788.6 and went on to become a commander in the security department. (TNG - Double Helix novel: Red Sector)
Stiles served briefly aboard the USS Enterprise-A during a mission to combat an incursion by the "Critters". At that time, he served in the operations division. (TOS comic: "Debt of Honor")
He eventually retired. He also went on to raise a family, and his grandson, Eric Stiles would serve in Starfleet in the late 24th century. (TNG - Double Helix novel: Red Sector)
Alternate timelines[]
In an alternate timeline in which John Frederick Paxton destroyed Starfleet Command and ended the talks for the Coalition of Planets in 2155, John Stiles was a relief navigator aboard the UESS Enterprise who took Phil Alden to sickbay after he was seriously injured in an Orion sneak attack near the Robinson Nebula in 2264.
Earlier in the 23rd century, Stiles' family had been ruined by one of the trade wars with the Interstellar Coalition. Consequently, he harbored a deep resentment towards non-Humans, particularly Vulcans. (TOS - Myriad Universes novel: A Less Perfect Union)
