Angirans are a developing humanoid species native to the planet Angira.

Biology[]

Unusually long legs give many Angirans a pronounced height up to 2.5 meters. Angirans generally have broad shoulders that taper to narrow hips.

Angirans are covered with short, gold fur, with longer facial fur. Healthy Angiran fur has a luster, whereas malnourished or sick Angirans have darker fur lacking any luster with bare patches. Fur turns silver white in the elderly. They have red-colored blood and lack superior night vision. Small, angular chins combine with their eyes and fur to lend some Angiran faces a lemur-like resemblance.

A painting of Angiran Prince Vikram showcased his towering height, but inaccurately drew him without fur.

Government and society[]

Angiran culture is based on feudalism, with noble and peasant classes, ceremonial and hierarchical strata, with upper classes being fashion-sensitive and traditionalist, comparable to some societies of 17th century Earth. Society is patriarchal, with two languages spoken among the noble caste, one used between males and the other for addressing servants and women.

Angirans identify with their clan first, the planet second, and highly value offspring. Many undertake tasks when astrology dictates a favorable outcome, and they have a complex, elaborate system of etiquette. Many on Angira believe that their shadow is their soul; one order of priests prays by chasing their shadows.

Many soldiers ascribe to an honorable Warrior Code. Their preferred weapon is the two-handed sena, a sword tapered similar to a Japanese katana.

Angirans applaud vertically, with their right hand held below the top.

History[]

For several thousand years, the Angiran monarchy ruled over a feudal society. In the 13th century, it was governed by Emperor Vischa the Mad. Consistently chaotic politics led to eight of the most recent nine kings dying from unnatural causes.

In 2254, Angira's progressive king sent his young son Vikram to be educated by the Federation and ushered in an era of industrial modernization which impoverished and destabilized the populace. As factories began emitting heavy pollution, the poorest families were forced to sell children into slavery for food.

In 2266, the king asked the Federation to update Angiran star charts when they brought his son back. The starship USS Enterprise was dispatched to leverage the diplomatic opportunity. Shortly after Spock and Hikaru Sulu beamed into the imperial palace with Vikram, however, Vikram's former master of protocol Lord Rahu led a coup d'état that assassinated most of Vikram's family. Spock, Sulu and Vikram fled to Kotah, a province historically controlled by Vikram's clan, where he was able to raise a militia against the coup leaders. (TOS novel: Shadow Lord)
