Arachnia

Kathryn Janeway as Arachnia.

Arachnia was a fictional character from Earth literature. She was the villainous Queen of the Spider People in the 20th century Earth science fiction series The Adventures of Captain Proton.

Fictional biography[]

She was described as cunning and treacherous, yet honorable with integrity. (CCG set: Decipher CCG, card: "Arachnia")

She used mind-controlling pheromones to control others and gain power. Doctor Chaotica was particularly susceptible. (Star Trek: The Magazine vol. 2, Issue 11: "Briefing: Captain Proton")

Arachnia once sent Chaotica a vial of her pheromones. When he opened it, it altered him such that any time he smelled any of it, he fell under her control. (VOY episode: "Bride of Chaotica!")

At one point, Arachnia tortured Captain Proton to get him to reveal defense secrets of the Incorporated Planets, then set him up to be crushed under the Wheels of Time. (VOY video game: Elite Force)

Alternate timelines[]

In an alternate timeline, Arachnia — as she appeared when portrayed by Kathryn Janeway on the holodeck in 2375 — was pulled into the temporal anomaly crisis. She was skilled in the fields of command, diplomacy, and security. Among the equipment she brought to bear in away team missions were her gown, pheromones, a PADD, type-2 phaser, coffee, a ray gun, an emergency transporter armband, and the holonovel Spell of the Spider. (ST video game: Timelines)

History and specifics[]

In the year 2375, Harry Kim and Tom Paris reenacted episode 18, "Bride of Chaotica", on USS Voyager's holodeck, with Janeway portraying Arachnia. She used her pheromones on Lonzak, then compelled him to lower the fortress' lightning shield. (VOY episode: "Bride of Chaotica!")

In 2376, Paris and Kim had planned to roleplay a Captain Proton adventure involving Arachnia, but Paris was too preoccupied with repairing the shuttle Alice to participate. (VOY episode: "Alice")

In 2377, Janeway portrayed Arachnia, this time in order to access a bioneural gel pack in Voyager's holodeck 2. At one point, she was strapped to Chaotica's torture table, but she was able to convince him to release her to stave off invaders from the eighth dimension. (VOY episode: "Shattered")
