Arani was a female Cardassian who worked as an agricultural technician for Khevet Agricultural Holdings on the colony planet Ithic II.
She only came to Ithic for her job, and intended to return to Cardassia Prime and rent a flat near the university in the posh section of East Torr. Rugal had difficulty making her understand this was impossible after The Fire.
She survived the Jem'Hadar attack on the planet because she and another technician, Leterik, had gone to a northern weather station to gather data on a covert project to edit the planet's climate without the knowledge of its human inhabitants.
She did not believe her colleague Leterik when he overheard the slaughter of the Cardassians by the Jem'Hadar on the radio, believing the Jem'Hadar were there to protect them and would only kill the human colonists.
She stayed at the northern weather station with Leterik for a few days before taking a flyer down the coast to Kovalet. Their flyer was shot down by human colonists after the Jem'Hadar had left, as they approached Manea, but Arani survived the crash and a subsequent attack as she walked in search of shelter.
