- For the mirror universe counterpart, see Arik Soong (mirror).
Arik Soong was a Human male alive in the 22nd century.
History[]
As a doctor working at Cold Station 12, Soong stole 19 Augment embryos from the facility in 2134. Going into hiding, he raised these 19 Augments until he was captured 10 years later and imprisoned in San Francisco.
When the 19 Augments stole a Klingon ship in May 2154, Soong was recruited to help stop the renewed Augment threat. Malik was killed by Captain Jonathan Archer with a particle rifle, after Malik tried to kill Soong for betraying his children. After losing his Augment children to the conflict, Soong came to recognize the unethical nature of manipulating human life. He abandoned genetic research in favor of studying the creation of artificial life, estimating it will most likely be two generations before such creations become feasible. (ENT episodes: "Borderland", "Cold Station 12", "The Augments")
On November 28, 2154, Na'kuhl agents attempted to free Doctor Soong from prison, with the initial goal of having him create Augments for them. However, they changed their mind to kill him. Commander Nereda of the 29th century timeship USS Pastak intervened with a strike team. She was wounded but the mission was a success and the Na'kuhl intervention neutralized. In her after action report, Nereda mused about the repercussions of ending the Soong line early, depriving Federation Starfleet of its first android officer. In 2382, the works of Arik Soong were secretly reopened as part of the Federation initiative to resolve the ongoing procreation crisis suffered by the Andorian people. (ST - Typhon Pact novel: Paths of Disharmony)
- It is implied by his name and appearance that Soong was an ancestor of Noonien Soong, the creator of Data and other Soong-type androids. In The Worst of Both Worlds, the mirror universe version of Noonien Soong told Jean-Luc Picard that Arik Soong was his great-grandfather, indicating that the same filial relationship existed between Arik and Noonien Soong in the primary universe. Furthermore, the fact that the mirror Arik Soong was executed in 2155, as depicted in the novel Age of the Empress, would seem to indicate that he had fathered at least one child in both universes by that time.
- Noonien Soong may have been named out of admiration that Arik had for Khan Noonien Singh.
