The Armstrong class[3] was a 23rd century[1] Federation[1] spacecraft type, a starship based on the hull of the 2230s-era[1] Einstein-class surveyor, in Starfleet service by the 2250s[1] decade. (TOS movie: Star Trek)
Service history and specifications
The Armstrong-class hull shared the same basic components and design language of the Einstein class, active in the 2230s. This included the flat, circular saucer section, with a long underslung warp nacelle extending from a short nacelle pylon. The primary, red-glowing impulse engine was attached to a strut placed within a conical cutout at the rear of the saucer.
The ship's rollbar connected with that strut in its center, and was attached to both the port and starboard edge of the saucer. An additional warp nacelle was attached underneath on either side of the primary hull.
Also in common with the Einstein and its derived classes, the nacelle pylons ended in round, blue-white impulse engines. (TOS movie: Star Trek)
The Armstrong, registry number NCC-1769, had entered service by 2258. In that year, Starfleet launched a brand-new USS Enterprise with a new, more advanced-looking hull material and geometry. (TOS movie: Star Trek)
The Armstrong was docked at Starbase 1 when the time-displaced 24th century Romulan mining vessel Narada attacked Vulcan. The Vulcan High Command issued a distress call, and the Armstrong joined the ships undocking from Starbase 1 one to respond. Enterprise was delayed and found only debris of the fleet in Vulcan's orbit. (TOS movie & novelization: Star Trek)
Following the destruction of the previous Armstrong in the Battle of Vulcan, Starfleet launched a successor ship of the same class and registry, which helped save the Vulcans from obliteration at the hands of the Romulans in the Battle of Ceti Alpha V in 2258. (TOS - Legacy of Spock comic: "Issue 4")
In 2259, the dark-colored USS Excelsior (NCC-1729) was docked at Starbase 1 when Enterprise departed for a mission to Klingon space. (TOS movie: Star Trek Into Darkness)
In 2261, the Wilson was in the Wagner-219 star system when the century-long lost United Earth ship Slayton NX-05 emerged from a temporal anomaly. The Wilson greeted Slayton, prompting its commanding officer, Captain Bran Hendricks, to proclaim he had never been so happy to see another starship before. (SA - IDW Starfleet Academy comic: "Issue 5")
From 2262 onwards, the Armstrong II participated in conflicts and missions in the disputed Neutral Zone. (ST video game: Fleet Command)
Around the same time, the USS Tereshkova (NCC-1811) suffered an attack by Orions. (TOS - Reunion comic: "Part 1")
In the primary universe, at least one ship of this class was docked at Deep Space Station E-5, located at a midpoint between the Romulan Neutral Zone and Sector 001, in 2371. (TOS - Spock: Reflections comic: "Issue 3")
