Arsenic (symbol As) is a chemical element, a metalloid with atomic number 33 on the periodic table.

Characteristics and history[]

Arsenic has an atomic mass of 74.9216. This element was discovered by Humans for the first time in Earth's ancient history. (ST reference: Star Fleet Medical Reference Manual)

To humans, the substance was extremely poisonous, and exposure would often lead to a painful death.

For Klingons however, arsenic was not poisonous. In fact arsenic was a necessary part of the Klingon diet, and a arsenic deficiency could lead to a number of health problems for a Klingon. (TOS novel: Doctor's Orders)
