Star chart of the Arteline sector.
The Arteline sector was a 20-light-year-wide sector within the Frontier region on the Federation side of the Romulan Neutral Zone. Notably, it contained Starbase 39-Sierra, Arteline, and Tyrus.
Specifics[]
The Federation maintained starbases along the border and a colony on Valer IV. The indigenous Artelines of Arteline IV and the Pselliads of Psellus III were spacefaring species. The native Palmians of Palmas were non-spacefaring farmers. Several colonial mining outposts in the area were operated by the Harelians, an independent civilization from a neighboring sector. A region known as the Laikos Extension bordered the Arteline sector. (Last Unicorn RPG module: The Way of D'era: The Romulan Star Empire)
History[]
In 2100, Romulans first explored and claimed the sector as a Romulan protectorate.
Following the the Earth-Romulan War, the Treaty of Cheron in 2161 placed the sector on the Federation side of the Neutral Zone, forcing Romulus to abandon its holdings, particularly Psellus III. Nervous about looking like another dominating empire, the Federation left the region to itself. (Last Unicorn RPG module: A Fragile Peace)
In the 2250s decade, Captain Christopher Pike began charting the sector during his first five-year mission. By the 2370s, it had yet to be mapped in detail. (Last Unicorn RPG module: TNG Core Game Book)
In the 2360s, a Napean Starfleet cadet served a one-year tour at a long-range sensor array in the sector. At this listening post, the cadet realized that sensor readings of trilinium fluctuations were proof of encoded Romulan subspace transmissions. The cadet earned a commendation for exposing what would have become a Romulan incursion into the sector. (Last Unicorn RPG module: Star Trek: The Next Generation Players' Guide)
Around the 2360s, both the Artelines and the Pselliads developed warp drive. (Last Unicorn RPG module: TNG Core Game Book)
In 2366, a Romulan warbird was discovered in the sector near Palmas by the Nebula-class USS Himori by happenstance, when the vessel's cloaking device malfunctioned. The warbird retreated after damaging Himori. (Last Unicorn RPG module: A Fragile Peace)
In 2369, the USS Enterprise-D visited Tyrus VII-A, a moon in the sector, where the crew first encountered exocomps. (TNG episode: "The Quality of Life")
In the 2370s, Collapsar 49 in the sector was used as a sensor test site for the shakedown cruise of the Nebula-class USS Discovery under Captain Ann Potrikos. (Last Unicorn RPG module: TNG Core Game Book mission: "Shakedown Cruise")
In 2371, genetically altered Romulans were caught running a clandestine laboratory on Arteline IV.
In 2374, Fleet Admiral Elisa Keil at Starbase 39-Sierra forwarded a brief from Starfleet Intelligence task force leader Doleo, warning that several Tal Shiar cells were known to be operating in the sector, and for COs to be wary of their presence and any allies they might have cultivated. (Last Unicorn RPG module: A Fragile Peace)
The OMS Kamerain departed Romulus aiming to smuggle Tal Shiar agent Rokan Par to Psellus III. (Last Unicorn RPG module: A Fragile Peace mission: Aiding and Abetting)
Later that year, a Romulan-backed coup on Psellus III attempted to swerve Pselliad progress toward becoming a member of the Federation. (Last Unicorn RPG module: A Fragile Peace mission: Armistice)

Background[]
- A Last Unicorn Games star chart placed Arteline in the Alpha Quadrant. Star Charts and Stellar Cartography: The Starfleet Reference Library denoted this sector's Starbase 39-Sierra as being in the Kaleb sector in the Beta Quadrant during the 2370s. The Kaleb sector was significantly larger than Arteline, suggesting the possibility that the Arteline sector was contained within, or another designation for, part of the Kaleb sector. STO video game: Star Trek Online plotted Starbase 39-Sierra in the Sierra system, also in the Beta Quadrant, by 2409.
- Although not directly contradicting other sources, Last Unicorn Games publications were the only sources that placed Starbase 22 and Starbase 25 so close to Romulan space. Other sources, for other decades, showed both stations elsewhere. These facilities may have been moved or re-designated during these other periods, or LUG events might be in a separate continuity.
