An artificial heart is a technological device used to replace a heart.

History and specifications[]

In 2273 on Agena IV, Doctor Leonard McCoy implanted a Mach-designed artificial heart within critically ill agricultural engineer Lenore Fowler. (TOS comic: "The Expansionist Syndrome")

In the 2320s decade, Jean-Luc Picard had to have an artificial heart to replace his original after being stabbed by Nausicaans. (TNG episode: "Tapestry")

In the year 2365, Picard had to have it replaced after it malfunctioned. (TNG episode: "Samaritan Snare")

It was noted in 2369 when the USS Enterprise that Picard was very fortunate to have not consumed grain made from the artificial Velexian grain as the underlying nanotechnology would have rejected his heart and killed him in the process. (TNG novel: Foreign Foes)

Also in that year Picard's artificial heart was damaged when he and other members of the Enterprise crew were attacked by a group of Lenarians, but Doctor Beverly Crusher was able to repair the damage. (TNG episode: "Tapestry")

In 2374, Julian Bashir replaced Ishka's heart with an artificial replacement. (DS9 episode: "Profit and Lace")

In 2377 of the First Splinter timeline, Kira Nerys' heart was damaged after being attacked by Taran'atar. The attack rendered her comatose. The damage from the attack was far too severe for Bashir to repair Kira's heart, forcing Bashir to replace the heart. She learned of the replacement from Benjamin Sisko when she woke up from her coma and was surprised how normal her new heart felt. (DS9 novels: Warpath, Fearful Symmetry)
