History and specifics
Rugal Pa'Dar and his adoptive Bajoran parents, Proka Migdal and Proka Etra, were living in Ashalla in the year 2370, just before Rugal was returned to Cardassia Prime. (DS9 novel: The Never-Ending Sacrifice)
The Shikina Monastery at Ashalla was key site of historic significance in the Bajoran religion. During the Cardassian occupation, a secret chamber under the monastery was the home of the Orb of Prophecy and Change, the only Orb the Bajorans prevented the Cardassians from taking.
By 2376, all the orbs had been recovered and were being stored in the same chamber in Ashalla. That year, the chamber was discovered to be the chosen spawning ground of a parasite spawnmother, and was where the parasites kept several hostages, including Kasidy Yates. The spawnmother was removed by an Orb experience initiated by Kira Nerys, and thrown out of normal space-time. Also while there, Yates gave birth to her daughter, Rebecca Jae Sisko.
In the mirror universe, Ashalla was destroyed by Iliana Ghemor (posing as Intendant Kira Nerys), who placed the blame on Smiley O'Brien and the rebels. In doing so, she hoped to foster Bajor's support and eventually claim the role of Emissary. (DS9 novel: The Soul Key)
