Athens was the capital city of the nation-state of Greece, located on Earth’s European continent.

It was a center of western Human civilization in ancient times. (TOS novel: The Joy Machine)

History Edit

On April 24, 1995, Earth Naval Captain Leon Ruszkowski of the USS Theodore Roosevelt (aircraft carrier) observed a beautiful morning in the Mediterranean Sea and longed to be in Paris or Athens. He suggested he and David Galanter should open a Greek restaurant when they retired. (TNG novel: Ghost Ship)

In 2267, James T. Kirk thought Athens of comparable size to Timshel City on the planet Timshel, which had a population of less than one million. He thought Rome was of a similar size when both it and Athens were the seat of western civilization. (TOS novel: The Joy Machine)

In 2267, Kirk compared the Federation’s struggle with Kor and the Klingon Empire with the competition between Sparta and Athens. Kirk pointed out that the celebrated Spartans knew only of war, but Athens, “known as the mother of all the arts,” was the city which survived. (TOS novelization: Errand of Mercy)

In 2270, Kirk was reminded of the view from the Temple of Diana on the Acropolis in Athens. He, Montgomery Scott, Janice Rand, and Leonard McCoy visited a grand hall in the city of Celebritan which was open on three sides, built on top of a semitropical island hill, surrounded by ocean, on the planet Mercan. (TOS novel: The Abode of Life)

In 2270, James compared the culture of the Romulans as having had Sparta and Athens together in one city with Romulan Commander Di'on Charvon. (TOS novel: The Fate of the Phoenix)

Author Judith A. Lawrence, widow of James Blish, resided in Athens in 1977. (Foreword of Star Trek 12 and TOS novel: Mudd's Angels)
