The Australian Outback is the name for the remote areas of Australia considered uninhabitable.

Part of the Australian Outback was used by the United Earth Starfleet and Federation Starfleet for survival training. Jonathan Archer, Charles Tucker III, and A.G. Robinson all completed survival training in the Australian Outback. (ENT episodes: "First Flight", "Harbinger")

Columbia's commanding officer, Captain Erika Hernandez was reminded of the Outback when she held an audience with the Caeliar Quorum. As the Caeliar were able to communicate through non-verbal means via catoms, they merely made an atonal humming similar to didgeridoos. (ST - Destiny novel: Gods of Night)
