Ventilator tube

Doctor Christine Chapel with a respirator unit in an isolation chamber.

An autobreather, respirator unit, or ventilator tube is a specialized medical technology, a machine that provides respiratory treatment for patients unable to breathe on their own, usually in an intensive care unit of a hospital or sickbay.

A respirator is a portable device that aids breathing and filters hazardous materials in unhealthy environments to prevent injury.

Specifics[]

An endotracheal tube often physically connected the device to a patient's lungs, preventing talking. (TOS - Starfleet Academy novel: The Delta Anomaly)

A portable unit could be used in emergency situations until a patient could be brought to a medical facility. (TOS novel: The Weight of Worlds, TNG - The Sky's the Limit short story: "Acts of Compassion")

By the 2370s, an autobreather could be implanted within a patient that did not require a tube. It created a sensation of "rhythmic swooshing" with each timed breath and was powered externally. Talking was possible, with difficulty. (VOY - Strange New Worlds 9 short story: "Choices")

History[]

23rd century[]

In 2255, after exposure to unusual smoke, Nyota Uhura and Jackie Madkins breathed through the use of medical ventilators. Madkins was treated at Mount Zion Hospital in San Francisco, and Uhura was treated by Starfleet Academy's CMO Charles Griffin at Starfleet Medical College. (TOS - Starfleet Academy novel: The Delta Anomaly)

In 2266, Christine Chapel used a portable respirator on Joe Tormolen to supplement his reduced breathing rate in surgery, but it wasn't able to reverse his declining condition. (TOS episode: "The Naked Time")

In 2269, as Spock struggled with a choriocytosis infection, McCoy observed that the Vulcan would soon need a respirator. (TAS episode: "The Pirates of Orion")

In 2269, after being caught in an explosion on the bridge, Montgomery Scott's mouth and nose were quickly covered with a portable respirator by Leonard McCoy, who then assessed his internal bleeding, fractured skull and electrical burns. (TOS novel: The Weight of Worlds)

In 2270, following an attack by Georges Mordreaux in some alternate realities, James T. Kirk was connected to a respirator in an intensive care unit. (TOS novel: The Entropy Effect)

In 2274, Doctor Christine Chapel was treated at Isoth Fortress's hospital on Sarsithia in an isolation unit with a respirator unit to help her breathe after succumbing to a disease in 2274. (TOS comic: "Quarantine")

24th century[]

In 2364, Ialona Daret fashioned a respirator unit for injured Weglash until Tasha Yar could replace it. (TNG - The Sky's the Limit short story: "Acts of Compassion")
