Autry was a 23rd century Human man. He served in Starfleet as a security officer aboard the Federation starship USS Enterprise in the 2260s under the command of Captain James T. Kirk.

He was described as stocky and stolid.
In the year 2268, Autry was a member of a landing party that surveyed Octavius IV. He was one of four caught in a cave-in and temporarily marooned on the planet, along with Kirk, Ensign Selena Karras, and Owens. He was knocked out when the ground collapsed, suffering from heat exhaustion and a head wound that required dressing. He helped excavate an escape route from the cave they were initially trapped in.
The four then found themselves trapped in a hollow depression near a Dombraatu map showing sites where dangerous creatures were located. With assistance, Kirk was able to climb the cliff face, then pulled the others out with jungle vines. Owens and Autry remained at the cliff site, as Owens couldn't walk well and they'd been signaling the Enterprise from there for two days.
