Axanarri

An Axanarri captain in 2151

The Axanarri (also known as the Axanar) were a humanoid species native to the planet Axanar, located in the Beta Quadrant. They were known to be androgynous, to prefer a nitrogen-methane atmosphere, and to produce triglobulin from their zymuth gland. A typical Axanarri lifespan exceeds 400 years.

Conflict note: In materials from the FASA RPG, the Axanarri were preindustrial humanoids with some genetic similarities to Klingons whose culture had been contaminated by an early (and inexperienced) first contact by the crew of the UNSS Bonaventure.
Conflict note: In materials from the Last Unicorn RPG, the Axanarri were tall humanoids with varying complexions; a fine whitish, dust-like secretion covers their skin and protects them from the high radiation levels of their homeworld. Axanari body and hair comes in an array of bright colors unknown to the Human head; violet electric blue, Kelly green, fire-engine red, and orange-peel orange. Head hair is long and thick, allowing Axanari to twist and braid it into tall, sculpted castles of hair. Perhaps by contrast, they wear long, plainly decorated robes.
Conflict note: An illustration depicting James T. Kirk during the Axanar Peace Mission shows him with a green-scaled reptiloid alien. (TOS comic: "Captain James T. Kirk: Psycho-File")

History[]

The species developed their first nation-states in 800 BC. (Last Unicorn RPG module: All Our Yesterdays: The Time Travel Sourcebook)

First contact between Humans and the Axanarri occurred in 2151, when the crew of the Enterprise (NX-01) encountered an Axanarri vessel following an attack by an unknown species on an Axanarri vessel. The unidentified assailants were "harvesting" triglobulin from the ship's crew. The Axanarri originally suspected that the Enterprise crew were responsible for the attack, but Ensign Hoshi Sato was able to communicate the truth to them. (ENT episode: "Fight or Flight")

The year 2222 saw the Axanarri create a new propulsion system. This system was a "'single shot' interstellar drive." (Last Unicorn RPG module: All Our Yesterdays: The Time Travel Sourcebook)

An Axanar security officer in the 2260s.

In 2251, the Klingon Empire attempted to occupy Axanar and make the Axanarri into a subject race. Fortunately, Captain Garth of Izar led a Starfleet task force to defeat the Klingons at the Battle of Axanar. Shortly after, Captain Rollin Bannock led the Axanar Peace Mission to smooth over relations with the Axanarri and help them get back on their feet. (TOS - My Brother's Keeper novel: Republic)

According to another account, Garth's involvement was precipitated by a disastrous diplomatic circumstance in 2252. Axanari application for Federation membership split the Federation Council, with some members not accepting Axanari's method of space travel as true warp drive. In frustration, Axanari invaded several nearby planets, and Garth was sent to quell the situation and force the Axanari to withdraw. His actions won the day, and the Axanari surrendered. New leadership negotiated a peaceful resolution. (Last Unicorn RPG module: TOS Core Game Book)

The LUG Star Trek roleplaying book All Our Yesterdays: The Time Travel Sourcebook gives the spelling of the species name as Axanari (with only one r).
