For other uses, see Azetbur.

Azetbur, daughter of Gorkon, of the House of Makok, (d. 2311) was a Klingon female who lived during the 23rd and 24th centuries. She served as the Chancellor of the High Council of the Klingon Empire for eighteen years, from her father Gorkon's assassination in 2293 until her own in 2311.

Biography[]

Her father sued for peace with the United Federation of Planets following the Praxis disaster. Immediately before and after her rise to power, she voiced her candid views on both the Klingon Empire and the Federation. Azetbur stated that the former was as obsolete as the notion of war itself while the latter was a "homo sapiens-only club."

Following Gorkon's death, the Klingon High Council named her as his successor. Against the advice of her chief-of-staff General Chang, who was a member of the cabal which arranged her father's assassination, she continued the peace initiative in his memory.

In her capacity as Chancellor, she attended the Khitomer Conference and witnessed the attempted assassination of Federation President Ra-ghoratreii, which was averted by Captain James T. Kirk, whom Chang and his co-conspirators had framed for her father's death. She was singularly impressed by Kirk's efforts to save the conference given earlier evidence of his prejudice towards Klingons, telling him that he had "restored [her] father's faith." (TOS movie, novelization & comic adaptation: The Undiscovered Country)

Kirk told her that she had restored that of his son David Marcus, who had been murdered by the Klingon Commander Kruge in 2285. (TOS movie, novelization & comic adaptation: The Search for Spock)

She was one of few women to serve as Chancellor and ruled over the Empire during a tumultuous era in its history. She presided over the signing of the Khitomer Accords and fostered the Federation-Klingon alliance during its early years. She was known to fight with a staff holding the incisor of an extinct saber-toothed animal.

By 2311, she was losing popularity as there were many Klingons who felt the Empire had been at peace for too long and grew weary of accepting Federation aid. During this period, Azetbur kept the Empire carefully neutral in the brewing crisis between the Federation and the Romulan Star Empire, declaring that she would instruct the Klingon Defense Force to aide the side that was not the aggressor. When the Tomed Incident occurred, she ordered the Klingon fleet to enter Federation space and join formation with the massing Starfleet force, prompting the Romulans to back down.

Later that year, she was assassinated by Ditagh, who hoped that after her death the more powerful General Kaarg would rise to power. Kaarg served as Chancellor until his death in 2323, at which time Ditagh succeeded him. (TLE novel: Serpents Among the Ruins)
