A banshee was a supernatural, ghostly entity in Irish folklore. It was a non-corporeal, humanoid-shaped, floating being known for persistent screaming and wailing.

They were also known to Scottish folklore. (DS9 novel: Vengeance)

Their high-pitched screams guided the dead. (TNG novel: I, Q)

Some animals had banshee traits, such as LaCerra's banshee. (TOS novel: First Frontier)

In 2267, the wraithlike Furies were described as having a banshee's face. (TOS - Invasion! novel: First Strike)

In 2369, howling Borg storming a concert hall on Ohniaka III sounded to Captain Jean-Luc Picard like banshees announcing a death. (TNG novel: Descent)

In 2373, the recording of a Levanian Consortium doctor reminded Miles O'Brien of banshees from beyond the grave. (DS9 novel: Vengeance)

In 2374 at The Captain's Table, Kathryn Janeway described feeling like a flying banshee scaring the crew of Zingara while discussing the Menace. Later she saw the Zingara as being surrounded by green-colored banshees. (VOY - The Captain's Table novel: Fire Ship)
