"Bar Association" is a fourth season episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. It was first broadcast in February 1996.

Tired of being exploited by Quark, Rom forms a union and leads the workers of the bar in a strike.

Summary[]

After Rom collapses in Quark’s bar, Julian Bashir suggests that Rom and the other bar staff need to form a union after he hears about their poor contracts. Quark also announces a pay cut and is unmoved by Rom's plea to reverse his decision. Rom decides to follow Bashir’s advice and announces his plans to form a union. The other Ferengi are astounded and worry about the FCA finding out, but agree. O’Brien offers Rom advice that going on strike will be the only way to have Quark take their demands seriously. Quark is genuinely shocked when the strike starts.

Quark tries to keep the bar running by installing a holographic system to create holographic waiters with his appearance to serve in the bar but the system he buys is easily disrupted. O’Brien and Bashir are shocked when Worf crosses the picket line and the three end up in a holding cell when a fight breaks out. Captain Sisko intervenes and asks Quark to sit down with Rom and come to an agreement, otherwise he will start charging Quark for back rent, power usage and repairs. Quark acknowledges that he will talk to Rom, but he only attempts to bribe Rom, who refuses.

Brunt of the FCA arrives on the station with two Nausicaan bodyguards and promises to end the strike by any means necessary. Brunt tells the Ferengi strikers that if they were on Ferenginar, he would have them thrown off the Tower of Commerce to their deaths, but as they are not, he can only threaten to make them destitute if they do not return to work. Rom stands firm, but Quark warns him that Brunt may kill him.

Brunt is concerned that any violent attempt against Rom will make him a martyr, so has his Nausicaan bodyguards beat up Quark instead. The two brothers come to an agreement: if Rom dissolves the union and calls off the strike, Quark will give in to their demands. Rom makes another momentous decision: he resigns from the bar and joins the Bajoran Militia as an engineer.

Meanwhile, Worf decides the station is too chaotic for him to live on, so moves to live aboard the Defiant.
