Baran is a star system near the borders of the Federation, Klingon Empire and the Romulan Star Empire, located in the galaxy's Sagittarius Arm, somewhere in the space of Alpha or Beta Quadrants. Formerly an independent system in the 2260s decade, Baran was in the territorial space of the Federation by the later 23rd century.

The Baran system's orbit was the location of a planetary system of three worlds. When the quarantine zone directive was issued in the 2260s decade, Baran was classified as an independent system, located at quarantine coordinates 62.26.55. (TOS video game: The Rebel Universe)
- Baran was identified in the gameplay manual, specifically as being the location of a planet where a landing party could obtain a miscellaneous technology.
By the 2280s decade, the Baran system was the location of Barabas, a Federation colony. (FASA RPG module: The Federation)
