Shortly afterwards, Giotto ordered Lieutenant Dave Galloway and Paul Bates to accompany Captain James T. Kirk and Commander Spock to the surface of the planet Gateway to search for Dr. Leonard McCoy. (TOS novel: The Fire and the Rose)

Background[edit | edit source]
Giotto was referred to as "lieutenant commander" but wore a full commander's sleeve insignia on his uniform, apparently a common practice as he did so around the same time period that Spock and Ben Finney wore commander rank insignia during their tenures as lieutenant commanders.
The novels Wagon Train to the Stars, From History's Shadow, and Purgatory's Key call him Barry Giotto. The novel A Choice of Catastrophes calls him Salvatore Giotto. The novel Past Prologue calls him Antonio Giotto.
