The baryon conversion rift.
The baryon conversion rift was a space disruption phenomenon created by Vinithi technology in the Beta Castelli star system, somewhere in the galaxy's Alpha or Beta Quadrants. The rift was created by a baryon converter, and radiated extreme temperatures and exhibited energy signatures which resembled those found in a universe that was three minutes old.
