Bates was a Starfleet officer assigned to the USS Reliant. Pavel Chekov, Clark Terrell, and Bianca Wilder were with him when their shuttle crashed on a Gorn planet. The Gorn sent a medical team to help, and Bates shot one of them as it attempted to greet him. (Alien Spotlight: The Gorn)
