The Battle of Frontier Day was the final battle between the United Federation of Planets' Starfleet and the last remnants of the main Borg Collective and their rogue Changeling allies. The Borg and rogue changelings desired revenge against the Federation and made an alliance to destroy their enemies. Unfortunately, the Borg failed in their attempts to destroy Earth and the Federation due to the efforts of the Admiral Jean-Luc Picard and his crew of the rebuilt USS Enterprise-D. The borg threat ended once and for all for the Federation.
History and specifics[]
History[]
Prelude[]
Following the end of the Dominion War and the Treay of Bajor[1], a group of changelings broke away from the Great Link. These changelings were dissatisfied with the peace established by the Federation. These Changelings, captured by the Federation, were experimented on by Section 31 as part of their Project Proteus on Daystrom Station. Ten of these changelings under Vadic escaped.(PIC episodes: "Dominion", "Seventeen Seconds")
Odo learned of these changelings and informed Captain Worf of their terrorist activities. However, Starfleet refused to acknowledge the threat due to the risk of restarting the Dominion War. Vadic and her fellow changelings, despite their short lifespans and other weaknesses, were able to infiltrate Starfleet using the abilities given to them by Section 31. One took the place of Captain Tuvok, but kept him alive.(PIC episodes: "Seventeen Seconds", "Imposters")
Following the USS Voyager's return in 2378, the Borg were decimated by Admiral Kathryn Janeway's pathogen and destruction of the Transwarp network. The Borg Queen formed an alliance between her remaining borg and Vadic's changeling schism to destroy Starfleet for revenge. To do so, they required the original body of Admiral Picard that was stored on Daystrom Station following his "death" on Coppelius in 2399[2]. Unknown to Picard and his crew during his time as Locutus[3], his body had latent Borg DNA that could be transferred into Starfleet personnel using the transporter and assimilate them. The Borg and Vadic's crew of the Shrike then discovered that Picard's and Dr. Beverly Crusher's son Jack Crusher had Borg DNA that would allow them broadcast a signal to assimilate the Starfleet crews.(TNG episode: "The Best of Both Worlds"; VOY episode & novelization: Endgame; PIC episodes: "Et in Arcadia Ego", "Võx", "The Last Generation")
Vadic and the Borg faced difficulties in acquiring Picard's son due to the efforts Captain Liam Shaw and his crew of the USS Titan-A assisting Picard and Captain William T. Riker. Commander Ro Laren, before here death, was also able to recruit Worf and Commander Raffaela Musiker to investigate the changeling conspiracy. Picard was able to convince Commodore Geordi La Forge to loan the cloaking device from the HMS Bounty at the Fleet Museum and join him. Together, they were able to bring back Data back by using the Daystrom M-5-10 body from Daystrom Station. When they all reunited, they were able to destroy the Shrike. However, Jack was drawn to jupiter where he was brought aboard the Borg Queen's cube where he became Võx.(PIC episodes: "Imposters", "The Bounty", "Dominion", "Surrender", "Võx")
The Battle[]
As the Titan-A returned to Earth to warn of the Borg's plans, the Federation was celebrating Frontier Day. As part of the the celebrations, Fleet Admiral Elizabeth Shelby of the USS Enterprise-F demonstrated the new Fleet formation mode for Starfleet. During the demonstration, crewmembers at the age of 25 were assimilated and by the borg and took over Shelby's fleet. Admiral Shelby, Captain Shaw, and the USS Excelsior's crew were killed during the takeover. However, Shaw's XO, Commander Seven of Nine took charge of the un-assimilated crew of the Titan-A and stayed to continue the fight. Picard and his crew were able to reach a maintenance shuttle and return to the Fleet Museum. There, La Forge unveiled the rebuilt Enterprise-D which was not part of the Starfleet mainframe and reactivated it.(PIC episode: "Võx")
During the Borg's attack on Earth, Sol Station was able to defend the planet and reinforce the planetary shields. As Earth's shield weakened, Federation President Anton Chekov sent out a planetary distress signal and warned all ships to stay away from earth due to the Borg. Aboard the Titan-A, Seven, Musiker and several members of the crew were able to take control of the Titan-A away from the Borg using the cloaking device. Together, they were able to disrupt the borg's attack by using the Prefix codes to scramble the borg's shield as they made attack runs on the borg controlled ships. However, the Titan-A's assimilated crew were able to stop Seven's attack runs. As the Titan-A came under borg control, Sol Station and Earth's shield fell. The borg then began targeting every major population center on Earth.(PIC episodes: "Võx", "The Last Generation")
The Enterprise-D was able to find the Queen's cube in Jupiter's great red spot. The cube, with 36% full power, continued to broadcast it's hive mind signal. The queen even allowed Picard and the Enterprise-D to come inside her cube to witness her victory over the Federation. Picard, using his residual link from the Borg was able to find the source of the Queen's signal from Jack while Riker and Worf looked for the signal beacon.(PIC episode: "The Last Generation")
As Picard attempted to reach his son, Riker and Worf found the emitter. When they sent the coordinates to the Enterprise-D, the remaining borgs fought Riker and Worf. The Enterprise-D, with Data's help, was able to fly through the cube. Despite the cube's weapons systems, Data was fley the Enterprise-D to the beacon. Despite the chance of killing, Picard, Jack, Riker, and Worf, the Enterprise-D destroyed the beacon.(PIC episode: "The Last Generation")
Before the cube was destroyed, Picard was able reconnect to the Borg hive mind and convince jack to break free of the borg and rejoin his real family. Troi was able telepathically detect Riker, Worf, Picard and Jack and were able to beam them out. The Enterprise-D was able to escape the Cube's destruction before it exploded. The queen and what remained of her drones were destroyed, thus ending what remained the Borg collective. The assimilated crews at Earth were freed from the Borg's control before they could destroy Earth and the Titan-A. (PIC episode: "The Last Generation")
Aftermath[]
The full scope of the Borg and changelings' plot was fully revealed. Starfleet Medical, under Admiral Beverly Crusher now, was able to devise to use the transporter to remove the Borg DNA from the assimilated crewmembers and expose the remaining changeling infiltrators. The changelings' prisoners, such as Captain Tuvok, were found to be alive. After the Enterprise-D was returned to the Fleet museum, Picard, his crew and Seven were given pardons. With Tuvok's and Shaw's late recommendation, Seven was named captain of the Titan-A, which was re-christened the USS Enterprise-G.(PIC episode: "The Last Generation")
