In an alternate timeline, the Battle of the Border was a six-day conflict between the United Federation of Planets and the Cardassian Union in late 2370, in which over 2000 Federation lives were lost. It was sparked when the colonists of Dorvan V refused to be evacuated after their planet had been ceded to Cardassia in the Federation-Cardassian Treaty of 2370, sparking a violent confrontation culminating in shots fired between the Cardassian warship Vetar and the USS Enterprise-D. The battle forced diplomats back to the negotiating table to redraw the border, in order to avoid problems such as those seen on Dorvan V. (TNG short story: "Gods, Fate, and Fractals")
