"Beauty and the Beast" is the name of a traditional fairy tale in human culture, about a man transformed by a curse into a monster, who can only be changed back by finding his true love.

Amanda Grayson cited this story as an illustration of the similarities between alien cultures, noting that Vulcan culture had a similar story called "Sikan and T'Risa", as did the Andorians, with the title "The Prince Trapped in Monster Form". (TOS novel: Vulcan's Forge)

One Cardassian opera was based on a story similar to Beauty and the Beast. (VOY novel: Enemy of My Enemy)
