Begum was a title used by the Tomariians in the mid 23rd century, referring to the supreme leader of their Tomariian Empire. The begum in the year 2270 was named IIsa, and she commanded a number of generals into military action to expand the Tomariian domain. Traditionally, strong prisoners would be taken from enemies of the begum and forced to accompany the begum's troops as flag-bearers. (TOS novel: Black Fire)
